Back to APIs

Reddit

Reddit shows a user's karma on their profile, a subreddit's weekly visitors in its sidebar, and a post's score right above its comments. All of it is public. Getting it into your own code is where the effort starts.

What the official API asks of you

An approved application. Reddit moved its Data API from self-service sign-up to a manual review: you describe your project, agree to the terms, and wait for a decision before any request is allowed. Commercial use needs separate written approval on top of that.

Once approved, you are into OAuth: a client ID and secret, a token to fetch and refresh, and a per-client rate limit to stay under. None of that is unreasonable for a full Reddit client. It is a lot of ceremony for reading three public numbers.

What Metrika gives you for Reddit

Reddit is one site with three kinds of things worth tracking, and Metrika accepts all three. Send a username without the u/ as an account to get karma and contribution count. Send a subreddit name without the r/ as a community to get its weekly visitors. Send a post as subreddit:post_id, taken from reddit.com/r/<subreddit>/comments/<post_id>/, to get its upvotes.

bash
$ curl -X POST https://metrika.run/api/v1/resources/search \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"resources": [{"platform": "reddit", "type": "account", "identifier": "spez"}, {"platform": "reddit", "type": "community", "identifier": "ruby"}]}'

Every number comes back under metrics using the common datapoint names, with a semantic field carrying Reddit's own word: karma arrives as likes with a semantic of karma, contributions as posts with contributions, weekly visitors as views with weekly visitors, and a post's score as likes with upvotes.

The same request shape everywhere

Reddit is one of many platforms Metrika supports, alongside Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, GitHub, Twitch, Kick, Telegram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Discord, Spotify, and SoundCloud. The request you write here is the request you write for all of them, and that matters because a community rarely lives in one place. The same project often has a subreddit, a Discord server, and an X account, and the useful view is all of them side by side. One token, one response shape, up to ten resources in a single call, mixing platforms freely.

What Metrika is not

Metrika is read-only and public-only. It will not read comments, search posts, list a subreddit's feed, or tell you anything about private or quarantined communities. If you need that, the official API is the right tool for the job.
